Business Trends – Office in a Box and Cutting Cost (and Cutting Value)

September 3rd, 2010

The rapid uptake and saturation of technology in the 21st century has seen the growth of more small business owners. One of the major contributing reasons for this has been the globalization of business from the influence of the Internet. With business now able reach out to potential clients and customers from all over the world, small businesses are becoming easier to operate, because of the larger market share they now have access to, and the key technologies developed simplifying (and automating) the operational activities of the business.

The term SOHO (small office / home office) used to describe the technology savvy and innovative small business owners, but now it seems to be the norm rather than something that is on the cutting edge of business operation. The humble home office used to comprise of the desktop, a modem, and a fax machine. However, with mobile phone and PDA technology vastly improving due to its pervasive use in modern society, we are beginning to see the next phase or trend of business operations beginning to emerge.

The “Office in a Box” generation is hitting the business world as we speak. These days, a mobile phone or PDA has the capacity to handle all your business needs, from using the Internet, making conference calls, word processing, spreadsheet, and even keeping you entertained on those long national or international flights. Software companies are now focusing on research and development of mobile/portable technologies for the mobile phone and PDA, with more and more traditional desktop software now being developed exclusively for this type of market.

The modern business owner chooses where they work, whether it is in the neighbourhood cafe, their favourite park, or out in the sun on their favourite beach. Do you still work in an office, or do you take your office with you wherever you go?

Cutting cost (and cutting value)

There is a very strange trend among businesses operating all over the world to “rationalize resources”, and cut “business operating costs”. It is true that the emergence of China and Korea as major manufacturing powerhouses has seen the cost of labour drop substantially for many of the major corporation from around the world. It is also true that the choice to outsource selected business operations overseas has seen the cost of labour reduced. However, there are two particular concerns raised by these practices, none of which seem to benefit the business or its employees.

Firstly, the profits made from these (sometimes unscrupulous) practices are seldom passed onto the employees. A clear illustration of this point comes from businesses that claim the need to cut staff numbers or wages, then announces record profits in its next quarterly or half-yearly report. It doesn’t take a MBA graduate to understand that although staff wages/salaries comprise of a significant proportion of the operating costs, it is also the workers that generate the bulk of the income for the business. Cutting staff to increase profit works on the short term, and may even please the shareholder, but in the long term reduces worker confidence in management about job security, as well as decreasing the output and productivity for that business.

Secondly, outsourcing business activities (especially core business activities) contribute to the loss of identity for the business, both in terms of its image and its operation. In most cases, not enough is done on the part of the owners to modify business activities, from a service provider to a service broker, therefore both the quality and accountability for their service decrease. This has obvious implications on the image and reputation of the business.

The point is, cut cost, but don’t cut value from your business. There are easy gains in the short term, but the ledger will be balance by much more painful losses in the long term.

Why a Garden Office is Better Than a Home Office

August 31st, 2010

Along with the rapid improvements in technology and the speed of Internet communications, working from home has vastly increased in the past few years. Office rental is costly, so it’s common for people to convert an area of their home into a home office. But have you ever considered moving that home office into the garden? Before you think we’ve lost the plot, read more about why we believe a garden office is much better than a home office.

With permission from the local planning office, you can still employ people to work for you because you can have large, stylish, bespoke garden office. If you want to employ several people, you don’t want them using your home as their workplace and you can’t easily squeeze them all into your spare bedroom. However, with a garden office, you can easily increase the size of your workspace or choose a larger design of garden office and give your employees plenty of room to work. Well, you didn’t think we were talking about shoving a desk in the shed did you?

With a outside office, you get the best work/home life balance. Whilst it’s just a short walk to work in the morning, you can be back at home for lunch, or to let the dog out, or fetch the kids from school. However, when you need to focus on work, you can close the door, and immerse yourself in your business, safe in the knowledge that when it’s time to clock-off, you won’t be stuck on the Tube on the way home. What’s more, unlike your home office, the postman, neighbours, and salesmen that come to your front door throughout the day won’t disturb you as you are separated from the main house by your sheltered position in the garden.

The outside office allows you to have a professional looking workspace that is separate from you home, meaning that you can bring clients or customers into your garden office, without them traipsing through your home, tripping over your children’s toys or tangling with the cat. Save your home space for you and your family by converting some of your garden into a home garden office.

With a garden office, you have the power to decide the exact size, shape and layout of the office that you want, rather than having to squeeze it into a small box room in your home.

Of course, if your office is placed in the garden, you can also benefit from alternative energy supplies such as mini wind turbines or solar panels. This means you can have a bespoke office that also gives something back to the environment.

Lastly, if you want to move house, you will find that you garden office adds value to your house and is an excellent selling point. Garden rooms of all types inspire potential house buyers because of their varied uses.

Richard Dreyfuss American Graffiti #1 (the beginning)

August 30th, 2010

American Graffiti is a 1973 period coming of age comedy-drama film directed by George Lucas, and written by Lucas, Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck. The film stars Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Paul Le Mat, Charles Martin Smith, Cindy Williams, Candy Clark, Mackenzie Phillips and Harrison Ford. Set in 1962 Modesto, California, American Graffiti tells of the exploits and adventures of a group of teenagers during a night of cruising around town and listening to pirate radio personality Wolfman Jack. Development of the film started shortly after the release of Lucas’s THX 1138 in 1971, at the same time as Lucas was developing an “untitled science fiction space opera”, later to become the basis for Star Wars. The film was initially funded by United Artists, but after creative differences arose with the studio, Lucas decided to work with Universal Pictures instead. Filming started at San Rafael, California, but the production was kicked out of the town and most of the film was shot in Petaluma, California. Although Universal interfered little with production, it did object to the film’s title of American Graffiti, recommending Lucas change it to Another Slow Night in Modesto. The editing of American Graffiti was strenuous: the first cut was roughly 210 minutes long, and the final cut was released at 112 minutes. To this day the location of the other 100 minutes of footage remains unknown. The film received positive reviews and was a unanimous box office success (recouping 92

Mad Max (Trailer)

August 29th, 2010

en.wikipedia.org Mad Max is an Australian apocalyptic science fiction action film from 1979 directed by George Miller and written by Miller and Byron Kennedy. The film, which starred the then little-known Mel Gibson was released internationally in 1980. This low-budget film’s story of societal breakdown, murder, and vengeance turned out to be a box office hit; it was notable for decades for having the highest profit-to-cost ratio of any motion picture (cost $400000, profit in excess on $100000000) only losing the record in 1999 to The Blair Witch Project. The movie was also notable for being the first Australian film to be shot with a widescreen anamorphic lens. It was followed by two sequels, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. pt.wikipedia.org Mad Max é um filme apocalíptico estrelado por Mel Gibson. Lançado na Austrália em 1979, foi dirigido por George Miller e escrito por Miller, James McCausland e Byron Kennedy, que produziu o filme. Wild Wild West

This movie was great. I am flummoxed by all the negative reviews. The instant I saw it was available for purchase I bought it – I didnt even think twice. The only way it could be better is if there were more interaction between Will Smith and Kenneth Branagh. Their interplay and dialogue totally steals the movie and is a piece of comedic cinema history. They were delightful together and are two of my favourite actors, as is Kevin Kline. Selma I have never had much use for; basically she’s talent-free and nothing more than cinematic T&A, which is also the role she plays in this film, so no surprise there. She has always been a non-entity and adds nothing to the film whatsoever, which is a shame, because it would have been nice to have a good female character. Put someone like Madeleine Kahn or Bernadette Peters in a role like this and it would have been pants-wettingly funny material. Mel Brooks seems to be the only director who understands how to cast women in comedies.

Another reviewer talked about this being a Steampunk fantasy, and yes, for lovers of Steampunk (myself included) this was also great on that level as well. This is not an historically accurate film, nor is it meant to be. It’s a comedy, and it’s a damned good one.

Seriously – I know a lot of folks here are putting the movie down, but they are wrong. This is a funny, well-done, and evidently vastly underrated film. Dont miss it, especially if you are a fan of Will Smith, Kenneth Branagh and / or Kevin Kline. Dont let the naysayers sway you – give this one a try.

Wild Wild West Specifications

One of the box-office smashes of the summer of 1999, this film by director Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black, Get Shorty) was raked by critics but embraced by audiences. Based on the 1960s TV adventure show that starred Robert Conrad, this film reimagined Secret Service agent James West as Will Smith, adding Oscar-winner Kevin Kline as his sidekick, agent-inventor Artemus Gordon. President Ulysses S. Grant puts West and Gordon on the trail of malign genius (and former Confederate soldier) Dr. Arliss Loveless (Kenneth Branagh) in a story about racism, partnership, and world domination. The special effects are lavish, even garish, but not all that special; they’re not enough to elevate a mundane and familiar plot. Even Branagh, playing a man who only exists from the waist up–literally–can’t find the juice in this lumbering affair. Still, the fast-talking team of Smith and Kline is a nimble one. Smith’s affable charm and Kline’s subversive wit win many points, though not nearly enough. –Marshall Fine

Movies in Print – The Gold Rush

August 23rd, 2010

Movie posters serve as the first teaser or trailer to any movie. The movie poster can lead the way to a box office hit if the design is truly effective. Some movie poster designs have really set themselves apart from the rest. Some have followed through with the actual film and some don’t. Nevertheless, an effective poster still does its job of attracting people’s attention to see the film. Whether the graphic design is executed well or the imagery provokes the mood of the film, poster prints can be considered as great artistic and marketing print mediums.

One movie whose poster serves as an example of this is Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush. Written and directed by Charlie Chaplin in 1925, the film is written as one of the greatest comedies of all time and possibly the greatest of Chaplin’s work. The film is about the misadventures of the hero, The Lone Prospector; played by Charlie Chaplin, as he tries to gain his fortune by finding gold in Alaska. He meets all sorts of characters along the way including a wanted criminal and a wealthy fellow prospector. He also falls in love with the most beautiful girl in town and has to win her heart amidst heavy competition from a handsome playboy. Charlie Chaplin as the hero plays the role well as he in the end, triumphs over his misfortunes to win the gold and the girl’s heart.

The film’s poster can be considered a comic classic. Executed in the iconic, cartoonish, poster printing style of the 1920’s, it features the hilarious Chaplin with his walking stick and bowler hat, sitting on top of an old fashioned heater, freezing in an Alaskan cabin. The poster works as Charlie Chaplin does the work of looking miserable but funny with his classically comic gaze and square moustache.

Milk Skimmed 3 Ruth Mahaney allotment 1

August 20th, 2010

MILK SKIMMED A provocative GLBT Historical Society roundtable about what was left out of Gus Van Sant’s movie. February 19, 2009 in San Francisco. Milk is a powerful fable about human rights, self-invention, and a movement’s proud vitality. Critical acclaim, box-office success, and awards underscore the film’s relevance. Still, the movie sidelined many prominent activists for gay rights in the 1970s, including lesbians and people of color, who stood with gay hero Harvey Milk. “Milk Skimmed” will explore alternative stories. It will also speculate on what Milk tells us about queer representation in popular culture today. Featured panelists include: Dr. Tomás Almaguer, Ethnic Studies Professor and former Dean of the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University, has authored Racial Fault Lines: The Historical Origins of White Supremacy in California (UC Press, 1994) and the widely-reprinted article “Chicano Men: A Cartography of Homosexual Identity and Behavior.” Gwenn Craig was one of the co-chairs for No on 6, a key organization working with Harvey Milk for the 1978 defeat of the “Briggs Initiative” to strip educators of their civil rights on the basis of sexual orientation. For the past 30 years, she has continued to fight for the rights of queer people, women, labor, and people of color. Dr. Joshua Gamson, Sociology Professor at University of San Francisco, authored Freaks Talk Back: Tabloid Talk Shows and Sexual Nonconformity (Chicago, 1998) and The
